Lathe bed regrinding (Robert Bastow)

I guess it is time for me to "Put Up or shut Up" 8^o The last lathe bed I had reground was in about 1983. It was a Smart & Browne Model A 10" x 24" The grinding was done in Cambridge, Ontario and cost IIRC about Can$125.00 at the time. I drove up there, with the bed, from Stoney Creek, and watched and waited while they did the job.

I recently looked at quotes to grind and rebuild my 1957 Standard Modern 12 x48" Utilathe. Similar wear to yours it sounds like, although maybe not as bad bed wear. I talked to several CNC grind shops in Chicago, Canada, and Southern California. All quoted similar prices - which I expect would be similar for your machine:

Lathe Bed Restoration | The Hobby-Machinist

Typical machine shops cannot handle grinding lathe beds. It takes a large grinder, in excellent condition, and a skilled machinist who has done lots of that work. Few shops will touch it, and it is expensive. Milling is not accurate enough, and considerable scraping would still be required afterwards.

How to determine which surface to scrape first on a bed ways.

Couple of points about the original question / post & how it relates to my 'project' 1. I know hand scraping was used extensively in the manufacture of larger machines (think 60ft + bed length with 20" shears) which were at best planed to +/- 0.0005"/10" or better - I'm basing this on what Ive read and discussions Ive had over the …

I have a cunning plan* for a lathe bed regrind

For me the bed grinding was the way to go. Cost was a a couple of days driving and some time hanging with friends. Commerce Grinding in Dallas was very helpful, the owner showed me how to 'hammer in' (flatten) a circular saw blade and I saw my taper swivel being ground on the same grinder that had done my lathe bed.

Is It Possible To Accurately Grind Lathe Ways At Home?

I read online that if the ways were ground, then the apron must be shimmed in order for the lathe to be accurate. Despite my original plan on keeping the 2nd lathe for spare parts, I was thinking about selling the 2nd lathe, with the swapped 9A bed. Is my idea of using my surface grinder on a 4ft bed crazy?

Wow, that poor lathe! I would say there's more than a few things wrong with that setup. There was an exhaustive thread about something similar a few years back; the consensus was that even with a much nicer, well thought out toolpost grinder based setup this was a bad idea. One of the issues was grinding wheel wear over the large surface …

I have a cunning plan* for a lathe bed regrind

Then I would carefully mount it parallel to the bed to be ground in both planes and use a grinder mounted to that second bed to grind the first one. This could possibly be cheaper that taking it to a grinding shop (depending on how much you value your time), but almost certainly would not attain the .0001 per foot or the parallelism that …

Bed Grinding & Restoration

Bed Grinding & Restoration . After using K81121 for 6 months or so it was time to get serious about rebuilding it. Prior to my ownership it was a working lathe in a Toolroom and had certainly been well used, and probably a bit abused in some areas. The lathe bed was one area where the wear from long use was evident.
